Sapphire is a single crystal form of aluminium oxide (al2o3). It is hard, chemically inert, with thermal stability, wide light transmission range and good dielectric parameters. These characteristics make it an ideal material for variety of applications such as LED and laser diodes as well as optical and mechanical components.
